Postage size guide for Ireland

Postal size is based on the sealed item's external measurements and weight. Packaging names and product dimensions are not enough to select a postage format.

Measure after packing

Finish the package, then measure its greatest length, width and thickness or depth. Include bulges, handles, tubes, padding and any rigid section that changes the outer shape.

  • Use the longest points
  • Do not compress soft mailers
  • Weigh with the label and tape included

Move through formats in order

Check letter, large envelope, packet and parcel limits against the same packed item. It must satisfy every relevant limit for a format; exceeding one means checking the next eligible option.

  • Letter: thin document-style mail
  • Large envelope: larger flat mail
  • Packet or parcel: bulkier goods

Check service-specific limits

A format accepted for one domestic service may have different availability or limits internationally or under express and registered products. Confirm both the format and selected service.

  • Select the destination first
  • Check maximum weight
  • Check longest-side and combined dimensions

Avoid avoidable surcharges and returns

Understating weight or dimensions can cause delay, payment requests or return. If an item is close to a limit, repack it safely or buy the next valid format rather than relying on measurement tolerance.

  • Use a reliable scale
  • Photograph measurements for business records
  • Update marketplace templates when packaging changes

How to get it right

  1. Seal the item: Complete all packing and protection.
  2. Measure three dimensions: Record the greatest length, width and depth or thickness.
  3. Weigh the package: Include all wrapping, tape and documents.
  4. Match the current table: Check every limit for the destination, format and service before payment.

How do I measure a parcel for An Post?

Measure the sealed parcel at its longest external points and weigh it with all packaging. Apply the current service rules.

Does a padded envelope count as a letter?

Only if the packed mailer meets every letter limit and content rule; many padded items fall into a larger format.

What happens if my parcel is oversized?

Choose an eligible larger service or another carrier before posting. Do not buy a smaller format using reduced measurements.

Compare the service before you pay

Use the packed item, exact destination and evidence you need to compare a valid current option.
