Large envelope postage in Ireland

Large envelope is a postal format, not a description printed on packaging. The sealed mailer must meet the carrier's current weight and dimension limits.

Use the postage size guide

Measure the finished mailer

Measure the longest edges and the thickest point after adding documents, backing board and closure. A padded mailer can swell beyond a format even when the item inside looks flat.

  • Include the flap and padding
  • Check thickness without crushing
  • Weigh the complete addressed item

Protect flat contents

Use a mailer strong enough for normal sorting and add a suitable backing sheet when bends could damage the contents. Do not create sharp corners or unsecured rigid pieces that can tear the envelope.

  • Seal all edges
  • Keep contents from shifting
  • Use packaging appropriate to the item's fragility

Choose the evidence level

Standard large-envelope postage is useful for replaceable documents and low-risk items. If you need a posting receipt, tracking, signature or compensation, choose a service that explicitly provides it.

  • Do not infer tracking from a barcode alone
  • Read compensation exclusions
  • Keep proof until the recipient confirms delivery

Reclassify when necessary

If the mailer exceeds any large-envelope limit or contains bulky goods, price it as the next eligible format. Under-declaring the format can lead to delay, surcharge or return.

  • One exceeded limit is enough to change format
  • Packets suit many small bulky goods
  • Parcels suit larger packaged items

How to get it right

  1. Pack flat: Secure and protect the contents inside a suitable mailer.
  2. Measure all limits: Record weight, length, width and maximum thickness.
  3. Pick the service: Choose standard, registered or another eligible option based on the evidence needed.
  4. Confirm the live rate: Use the current official rate for the destination and selected format.

Is a padded envelope a large envelope?

Only if its packed weight and every external dimension remain within the current large-envelope limits.

Can I send goods in a large envelope?

Possibly, if the service accepts the contents and the sealed item meets its format limits. Check customs requirements for international goods.

Is large-envelope postage tracked?

Not by default. Tracking depends on the service purchased, not the packaging format.

Compare the service before you pay

Use the packed item, exact destination and evidence you need to compare a valid current option.
